How to delete your Reddit account

About deleting your Reddit account

Reddit is a popular social network. If you no longer wish to use the service, deleting your account is a smart way to reduce your digital footprint and keep your personal information out of unused systems.

Common reasons to delete your Reddit profile:

• You want to close an account you created for a one-off purchase or trial.
• You no longer use the service and want to minimise your digital footprint.
• You want to reduce the number of companies holding your personal data.

How to delete your Reddit account

Follow these steps to close your account:

1. To delete your Reddit account, log in to your account and navigate to User Settings.
2. Select the Account tab, scroll down to the bottom, and click Delete Account.
3. Confirm your decision to permanently remove your data.

What happens to your data

When you request the deletion of your account, you are exercising your right to be forgotten. While exact processes vary, typically the following happens:

• Some records may be retained for legal, security, or regulatory compliance purposes.
• Your account profile, including your username and personal details, is removed from active systems.
• Personal information linked to your profile is deleted or anonymised where required by law.
• Associated activity, preferences, or history tied to your account may be permanently erased.

Please note that some records may still be retained for security, legal, or regulatory compliance purposes, as required by law.

Privacy considerations

Before you delete your account, take a moment to review your broader digital security:

• Use a password manager to keep unique, strong passwords for every account you keep.
• Consider using an alias email address for future sign-ups to limit data exposure.
• Request confirmation from the service once your data has been deleted.
• Review your other accounts that use the same email address or password.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is deleting my Reddit account permanent?

Yes, once the request is processed, your account and associated personal data are typically removed from the service's active systems permanently.

Can I recover my account later?

Usually not. Deleting your account is generally irreversible, so if you return you would need to create a new profile from scratch.

What is the difference between deactivating and deleting my Reddit account?

Deactivating temporarily disables your profile while keeping your data stored on the company's servers, and you can usually reactivate it at any time. Deleting permanently removes your account and asks the service to erase your personal data, which is the better choice if you want your information gone for good.

How long does the deletion process take?

Most companies respond to account deletion and data removal requests within 30 days, in line with standard GDPR and CCPA timelines.

Who can I contact if I need help with my Reddit deletion request?

Reach out to the service's support or privacy team through their official help centre or contact page, and keep a copy of your deletion request for your records.
